This unit has been sold by various outlets in the past and one hunting/fishing big box store in particular has a whole bunch of short, negative reviews moaning about battery life, etc. There are refurbs and new ones for sale on the auction sites currently as well as this newer Amazon listing (Sept, 2011). There certainly may have been problems with these units in the past but I smelled a skunk in all those ranting reviews elsewhere that seemed scripted - or maybe planted reviews by the people that sell similar units for many hundreds of dollars more? Whatever the reasons for the bad reviews, I took a chance and bought a new one on eBay and have had no trouble whatsoever. Please understand that I cannot comment on how long it may last as I have only had mine for a couple weeks. Nor can I tell you if there are defective units amongst those now being sold as new or refurbished so be sure of your sellers return policy.
